Sister projects

OPALGUE is an extensive programme with a wide coverage, it’s about exploring the whole of the value chain. The roll out of the different parts as well as the global coordination and communication of the programme rely on setting up projects carried out by several OPALGUE partners, which come from the global initiative and feed the programme’s objectives.

PSAMAL - MacroAlgae, Polysaccharides, Oligosaccharides, Cosmetics, Feed
Project leader : Unité Transformations & Agroressources (Université d'Artois)
Partners : BioEcoAgro - Log - Ulille
Period : 2025
Description :
The PSAMAL project aimed to establish collaboration between the Transformations & Agroressources Unit at the Artois site and the BioEcoAgro joint research unit, focusing on an emerging theme in both units: the valorization of macroalgae. Working in synergy, the objective was to study processes for extracting and purifying polysaccharides from macroalgae using innovative green biotechnologies.

Financial support: SFR Campus de la mer

EPURALGUES - Extraction and purification of seaweed biomolecules and biopolymers.
Project leader : UMRt BioEcoAgro - Université de Lille
Partners : Unité Transformations & Agroressources (Université d'Artois)
Period : 2024-2025
Description :
As part of WP4 of the CPER (Innovative eco-processes for intensifying the transformation and production of bio-based molecules), the objective was to focus on the extraction and purification processes for proteins from algae selected for the study.

Financial support: CPER - BiHauts Eco de France

MALGABIO
Project leader : Unité Transformations & Agroressources (Université d'Artois)
Partners : UCEIV (ULCO) / GEC (UPJV)
Period : 2024-2025
Description :
The MALGABIO project is part of the Macro-Algae Industry Development Program in Hauts-de-France, which is currently being implemented (Affaires Maritimes and SCOGAL). It consists of developing a sector that manages the sustainable cultivation of seaweed and its high value-added use in order to offer natural seaweed-based solutions for human, animal, and plant well-being. These products will be alternatives to petroleum-based products and raw materials. MALGABIO is therefore proposing to study new ways of exploiting macroalgae by extracting and identifying molecules of interest for their antimicrobial and biostimulant properties. The MALGABIO project is an exploratory step enabling the project to establish macroalgae cultivation on the coast to consider innovative and high value-added exploitation sectors.
The three partners in the consortium will contribute to this project in collaboration with SCOGAL, sharing the results with the consortium led by SCOGAL, which aims to experiment with the cultivation and use of macroalgae in the Hauts-de-France region.

Financing structure: A2U (Université d'Artois, ULCO, UPJV)
ALGABIOST - Macro algae as source for biostimulants
Project leader : Unité Transformations & Agroressources (Université d'Artois)
Partners : UCEIV (ULCO) / GEC (UPJV)
Period : 2024
Description :
The aim of this project was to find new uses for macroalgae crops grown on the Hauts-de-France regional coastline. In this pre-feasibility study, the biostimulant activities of fractions and biomolecules extracted from the targeted macroalgae were screened. Biostimulants (BS) are products that are part of the current agroecological transition in agriculture, as they help maintain sufficient production while preserving the environment. They improve the resilience of cultivated plants to abiotic stress in the context of climate change.

Preparatory study for the experimentation of seaweed farming in Northern France
Project leader : CRP
Partners : CRP, SCOGAL, NAUSICAA
Period : 2024-2026
Description :
This project aims to determine precisely the operating model, the technical design and the operational structure to realise the experimentation of seaweed farming, to evaluate the budget and compile files in order to get financial support for the expérimentation, and to answer questions of professionals and citizens about the experimentation phase.
In a nutshell, here are the 4 main objectives :
  • Make sure the at-sea structure that holds the cultivation lines is adapted to the experimental exploitation and to the sea conditions.
  • Manage communication of the programme and of the experimentation
  • Make sure we get licenses for the at-sea plots and the authorization for their marking, and coordinate the installation
  • Structure the experimental phase with partners and validate financial supports

Seaweed farming feasibility study
Project leader : CRP
Partners : CRP, SCOGAL, AQUIMER, IFSEA
Period : 2023-2024
Description :
It's the starting point of the story. The objective of this project is to know better seaweeds and their farming. To do so, we planned to meet the main actors of the French and European seaweed sector, to study the technical feasibility of farming, and to evaluate the markets in general. This is also the opportunity to get structured and prepare the request for trial plots licences.
